August 2019

Steve and Ainsley will once again be in New Zealand performing at several venues between the 3rd and the 11th August, beginning and ending in Christchurch. Beginning with a wonderful reunion concert of musicians from the 80’s and 90’s, names that will be familiar to many of you, from when Polynesian Performing Arts was established. Today the voices of Pacific Islanders have gone world-wide and we will be celebrating with artists like Dallas Tamaira from Fat Freddie’s Drop and Ladi6, both still very young when Steve Apirana began his career as gospel singer. This concert – Meet me at the Doghouse - is the springboard for several concerts in churches and Marae between Christchurch and Motueka. A full itinerary will follow. Meanwhile come and join us on Saturday night – the 3rd August – in the Christchurch Town Hall.

A short Bio:

Making a name for himself as a solo artist back in the late eighties and nineties, Steve Apirana mixes his highly tuned gift as communicator, guitarist and vocalist, with an extraordinary sense of humour. Musically he is eclectic in style, but specializes in blues and gospel. Over the 40 years of his career he has played with some of the best. He first took to the stage in Butler, sharing the stage with such luminaries as Daddy Cool, Black Sabbath and Average White Band, at Festivals across New Zealand. He then joined gospel band Judah, when his life took on a new direction, leaving secular music behind and concentrating on the Gospel seen for a time. Later he started up sixties spoof rock band “The Velvettes”, and finally toured solo, taking the family with him when he could. In more recent years he has teamed up with wife Ainsley, to bring a new side to his unique gift. Together they captivate audiences in a way that very few can.

Ainsley began her career as a musician alongside Steve back in 2001 when she released her first album, Autumn. She has since gone on to record Cappuccinos and Vanilla Squares, and performs on guitar whistle and flute alongside Steve on each of their tours.
